NEPAL Khumbu Glacier -- Dec 2005 -- An aerial view looking northwest over the Khumbu Glacier. Also visible is Mount Pumo Ri (right, 7165m), Mount Changri (centre left, 6027m) and both Lobuche West (left 6145m) and Lobuche East (6119m) and the respective glaciers which are tributaries to the main Khumbu Glacier. A popular climbing route to the summit of Mount Everest (upper right) this glacier has retreated over 5km from where Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay set out to conquer the worlds highest mountain in 1953. Scientists say these huge Himalayan glaciers are melting fast which could threaten Asia's water supply in the future having a devastating impact on the region's agriculture -- Picture © Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos
